One of the analogies I use most often is that of a traffic jam.

Your body is constantly transporting things from A to B. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients. The lymphatic system removes waste. Nerves carry information. Hormones carry messages throughout the body. For all of this to happen efficiently, there needs to be flow.

Now imagine a traffic jam. The road isn't completely blocked, but everything slows down. Traffic starts looking for alternative routes. Before long, the congestion spreads far beyond where it first began.

The body works the same way.

Throughout life we accumulate restrictions. An old injury, surgery, repetitive movements, chronic stress, or emotional experiences can all leave their mark on the body. It adapts remarkably well, but over time those adaptations become our new normal. Most people have no idea how many restrictions they've accumulated because they've forgotten what unrestricted feels like.

When people invest in their health, they usually focus on nutrition, strength training, cardio and, more recently, nervous system regulation. All of these are important.

But one aspect of health is often overlooked:

The health of the fascial system.

Over the past decade, research has increasingly shown that fascia is much more than just a connective tissue that holds our skeleton together, connecting us from top to toe. It is a living, body-wide network that communicates continuously with the nervous system, immune system and endocrine (hormonal) system through mechanical, cellular and biochemical signalling.

Researchers implanted breast cancer cells into two groups of mice. One group was gently stretched for just 10 minutes a day, while the other group wasn't. Four weeks later, the stretched mice had tumors that were approximately 50% smaller, with lower levels of an immune checkpoint that normally blocks the body's ability to fight cancer cells, and higher levels of the molecules that help resolve inflammation. The researchers weren't claiming that stretching cures cancer — they were showing that changing the mechanical environment of connective tissue can influence biology far beyond the muscles themselves.

That reminds me of an analogy I once heard.

"Imagine a fish living in polluted water. You can feed it the best food, give it medication and treat its symptoms, but if the water never changes, the fish can never truly thrive."

Fascia is for your organs what that water is to the fish — the environment they live in. And the quality of that environment says everything about the quality of them.

If we remove the restrictions from the fascia, the traffic starts moving again.

This is why I love giving Thai massage. Rather than focusing on one painful shoulder or a stiff neck, it works with the fascial system throughout the entire body. If we reduce restrictions and improve the health of that system, we're not just working on one muscle — we're improving the environment the rest of the body has to work with.
